Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that occurs suddenly during pregnancy. In the United States, 3 to 8 out of every 100 pregnant women develop gestational diabetes. Diabetes means that your blood sugar is much higher than normal. Your body uses glucose for energy. But too much glucose in the blood can be very harmful. Too much glucose can damage your fetus, especially when you are pregnant. If you have type 1 or 2 diabetes and you decide to get pregnant, be sure to consult your doctor beforehand.
